Paul Ottoson

Paul Ottoson, a graduate of audio engineering school Pinnacle College, has won an Academy Award in Sound Editing for the critically acclaimed film “Zero Dark Thirty.” Since graduating from Pinnacle College in 1992, Ottoson has won many awards, including two Oscars in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker.”

“Paul’s sought-after expertise and repeated talent recognition emphasize his status as one of the best in the industry,” said Sal Younis, President and CEO of Pinnacle College, a leading school for audio engineering since 1972. “We are delighted to hear about Paul’s nomination for his outstanding job as sound editor in ‘Zero Dark Thirty.’ Pinnacle College aims to not only give our students a quality education, but to also prepare them with the skills and training necessary for successful careers in music production and audio engineering. Ottoson is a sound supervisor, sound designer and sound mixer for the motion picture industry. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts have recognized him for his work as a supervising sound editor and sound designer. Previous recognition includes his work on “Spider-Man 2” (2004), four nominations for a Golden Reel Award by Motion Picture Sound Editors USA, and two nominations for the International Press Academy’s Satellite Awards, winning one for Best Sound in 2012.

Eight years after coming to America, he entered the film world as the sound effects editor for The Demolitionist and in 1998 Paul won his first Emmy for the episode Rat in the series National Geographic Explorer. As his career progressed he’s been recognized for his work as a supervising sound editor and sound designer with Oscar and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations for Spider-Man 2 (2004), four nominations for A Golden Reel Award by the Motion Picture Sound Editors, USA, for Best Sound Editing, and two nominations for Satellite Awards, winning one for Best Sound (Mixing and Editing) in 2012 (2009). In 2010 Paul was recognized for his work on The Hurt Locker (2008) with a Cinema Audio Society, USA, award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, a BAFTA award for Best Sound, and two Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Sound with Ray Beckett and Best Achievement in Sound Editing.

To date he’s worked as a sound effects editor, sound designer, supervising sound editor, sound re-recording mixer, and combinations of these positions for more than 120 projects including The Scorpion King (2002), S.W.A.T. (2003), Spider-Man 2(2004), The Grudge (2004), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Grudge 2 (2006), The Messengers (2007), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008), Drag Me to Hell (2009), 2012 (2009), and The Hurt Locker (2008), where he was the re-recording mixer, sound designer and supervising sound editor. Paul’s future projects include Green Hornet and Spider Man 4.
